Back in the 90s, Charles Esten was cast in the pre-Broadway production of Smokey Joe's Cafe. He said that in his previous Broadway auditions, he usually did fine in the initial round for singing but would decline dance callbacks because he knew he couldn't dance. He somehow made it past the dance audition for this show (he says he bamboozled them) and was cast in the show. Three weeks into rehearsal, the director showed up to see how the cast was doing and saw that Charles could not dance. He ended up being replaced by another actor.

At this point, Charles learned that because he had signed a contract to do this show, he was going to be paid for an entire year to NOT be in the show. It all worked out for the best because if he had actually been on stage doing that show, he wouldn't have been available to do Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Bonus: several years later, he ran into DeLee Lively, who was one of the female leads in Smokey Joe's Cafe. She was with the actor who had replaced Charles in the show. As a result of Charles leaving the show, she had met his replacement Robert and they ended up getting married and having three kids, so Charles being a bad dancer worked out for everyone!
