Almost done with watching the Oscar nominated movies!! All that remains on my list:

Robot Dreams
Golda
To Catch a Tiger
The Eternal Memory
American Symphony

+ all the shorts, which are conveniently coming out this weekend in theaters. I will probably watch the documentary ones at home, as I think they are all available online, but I will have to go see the live action + animated nominees at the theater.

This week's watches include Io Capitano, The Teacher's Lounge, Society of the Snow, and Casablanca. all of which fall on the spectrum of good to great.

We saw director Q&As with all three of the foreign films I just mentioned, and those definitely impacted how I see the films a little bit.

For instance, the director of Io Capitano talked about some on-set dangers to his actors during stunts that made me question his judgment tremendously - it's a good film, but hire better stunt coordinators.

The director of Society of the Snow seemed extremely confident in his film to a sort of annoying degree, and talked about the difficulties of shooting in the cold, snowy environment with a couple survivors of the crash sitting in the audience, which felt so weird to me. They seemed fine with it, don't get me wrong, but it was one of the weirder Q&As I've attended.

The director of the The Teacher's Lounge talked about how full of self-doubt is he about his art, which was extremely relatable. He also discussed how this was his fifth film, and because it was picked up for the Oscars, he got much more financing for his next film. He's like "It's not about the film at all... it's like I am a stock, and they want to invest in me because of this film's success", which is one of the most honest things I've heard any director say.

Would love to watch a few things we have not had time for, and I honestly wanna see Madame Web (I know, I know), but that will have to wait til next week because we're busy this weekend.

Having watched Io Capitano, omg about the director!? Now I'm second guessing the harrowing parts of the movie.

I don't know why I find that so funny to hear about Bayona. Was this before or after the Goya Awards? Maybe he was still on a high from that.

To Kill a Tiger can really grind you down and Eternal Memory is hard if you've ever had a loved one with Alzheimer's so definitely good call on making those home watches.

If you need help with Robot Dreams, I'm here for you ha

Lol tbf, I think it was literally the day after the Goya Awards, so Bayona was probably jet-lagged and on a bit of a high from that.

And yeah, the director of Io Capitano talked about [Spoiler (click to open)]how a stunt guy fell off one of the trucks driving through the desert, how the lead actor fell on his face onto the table while he was being suspended upside down in the prison (he wasn't seriously injured, but still!!!), and that some of the crowd scenes on the boat felt out of his control at times... like, sir!! It is your set!!! The fuck? [Spoiler (click to open)] And if that's what he was willing to share in a public Q&A, I have concerns.

Thank you so much re: Robot Dreams - I will absolutely get back to you if I am in
need!

Ahhh!! So that guy falling off was unscripted?! And damn, I was wondering that about the suspension scene. Just yikes.
