I just finished watching it.
Honestly, had this been done by another person, I don't think it would get the hate it's getting. Yes, I may be a fan, and I'm not trying to be delusional, but I do see this being a bit of an autobiographical musical. I'm actually surprised with how introspective her album is and her new approach to contemporary dancing in the film. She's been saying in interviews how she had to "do the work," and I was skeptical until I heard how the lyrics are pretty confessional. I can see why she thinks this is her most personal album to date. It doesn't just talk about Ben. She does talk about having done her own inner-child work.
I always try to be objective while acknowledging I have biases and my own subjectivity, but if people knew Jen's true story, I think people may have empathy for the shit she went through. I just didn't like the use of the celebrity cameos. I get she was trying to keep it light with humor, but I think she could have done without that the celeb casting and the astrology stuff, even though she does believe in her astrology.
[Spoiler (click to open)]She pokes fun at herself, and she does admit how she was quick to move on from one guy to another. She did touch on how people in her circle would try to intervene and point out how she was a serial dater who couldn't be alone, that they thought she was a sex addict at one point. They were concerned with her dating Casper because he was incredibly young.
Rebound is a song about Marc because she admitted he was one in her book from years ago, and sadly, that part of the movie was triggering because there was DV. He's been alleged to be abusive and was with his first wife. At the end of the song, she's flees to a friend and says, "Fuck Libras!" Jen has been known being very picky not wanting to work with Virgos on tour for a reason (Marc's one).
In the movie, you actually see her interacting with her inner child, and that was painful because the her inner child is in cuts and bruises screaming to her, "You don't love me! You love everyone else BUT ME!" That was really sad, and she's trying to love herself by healing her inner child.
She doesn't go into great detail, but she does talk about her mommy and daddy issues a TINY bit in her recent interview with Zane Lowe. Dad was emotionally unavailable and was always working at night, and her mom was "the center of attention." Jen was the middle child, and her mom wanted to be an entertainer/performer, but her mom didn't let her. Her mom became a teacher and wanted Jen to be a lawyer. Jen and her mom would fight A LOT because Jen wanted to be her own person, and her mom would tell her, "If you live in this house, you need to go to school." There was a nasty fight in which Jen left and was temporarily homeless and was sleeping on the couch in her dance studio and at one point crashing at the instructor's place. Her dad was not thrilled because the instructor was a grown man, that he once grabbed her physically and by the hair to bring her back home.
Both her parents are divorced. I genuinely think her mom isn't happy Jen became what she couldn't be, and Jen just knows how to keep nice and work around her mom, but her mom was never supportive of her. Jen was a young adult doing a gig in Europe and when it cancelled, she called her mom for help, only for her mom to hang up on her and tell her, "You decided to do this, so you are on your own." Her mom is just nice because Jen actually made it and has money, but she never supported her. Jen shared how her mom would beat the shit out of her.

I like to give the benefit of the doubt if Ben has been able to treat his depression and maintain sobriety, but you can tell both of them have intergenerational trauma and had to work on their shit which they probably didn't 20 years ago. He cheated on her then, and she was trauma bonding. Marc was abusive and cheated, and A-Rod cheated too. She cheated on Chris which wasn't cool, but who knows!
I can see why she said this may be her last album. If this is her best work to date since This Is Me... Then, it would be hard to top it off. She'll make music and release EP's and singles, but I don't blame her if she wants to make that her last album. It's very Latin R&B like TIMT meets On the 6.
