January 29, 2024 Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva has been retroactively disqualified from the 2022 Winter Olympics, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ruled. The ruling means that Russia will be stripped of the gold medal in the team event. USA placed second and Japan placed third. Canada placed 4th and could be upgraded to bronze.
The IOC did not present any medals after the team event when Kamila’s positive doping test came to light. It has been almost 2 years since the Beijing Olympics.
CAS upheld appeals from the World Anti-Doping Agency, which asked the court to disqualify her and ban her. A Russian tribunal had cleared her of blame.
The ban is effective from December 2021 to December 2025, about 7 weeks until the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Kamila’s lawyers argued that she was contaminated by her grandfather’s heart medication. The court ruled that she could not establish she had not committed the doping violation intentionally. They also ruled that there was no basis to treat her differently than an adult athlete under the rules.
