The decision has sparked a fiery online debate in Japan.

Many believe she does not represent Japan while others have shown support saying 'she does not have to look Japanese to represent Japan.'

In my country they’ve just become a scam, imo. Several women have stepped down after winning because they never got the prizes or support promised.

Yes and no. It depends on what people consider “Japanese”. Statistics show 98.1% of the population is “Japanese” but that includes Ainu, Ryukyuan, Zainichi and half-jpn/half-Brazilian. What is homogenous on paper and how people are treated in society doesn’t match, and this idea that Japan ISNT diverse is actually harmful and rooted in colonialist ideology and imperialism.
