Rolling Stone did a 20th anniversary piece on the movie during the 'Priscilla' press tour where they interviewed Sofia. When the reporter brought up Scarlett still being a teenager during filming, Sofia just said that Scarlett was "really mature for 17" and she didn't feel weird casting her because she was "close to Scarlett's age back then" [she was actually 31 at the time]. Near the end of the article she admitted she ignores the criticism regarding the casting and age difference between Bill and Scarlett, and when the reporter even brought up the famous opening shot, Sofia was just like, "🤷 I guess I couldn't shoot that today." Basically 0 growth or perspective in the past two decades, even just retrospectively. It's really disappointing and frustrating, especially since she went through the effort to hire a 24 year old for 'Priscilla' and Kirsten Dunst has always credited Sofia for protecting her when they worked on The Virgin Suicides. It's strange she had no problem convincing a teen girl to shoot that ass close-up even though Scarlett's always said she was very nervous about doing it. Just a bizarrely high level of cognitive dissonance especially considering her latest movie.

jesus

i'm no fan of scarjo but i do think sofia views her much the same as most men in hollywood do because of her body and sex appeal. so many ppl took advantage of scarjo ~looking older or having a ~more mature body in a lot of her early roles

Considering she grew up in an industry where predatory men are the norm, I'm not that surprised that she feels this way.

I mean... look at the casting for the OG Grease movies. And I think Tate Donovan was like 31 years old when he got casted as a high schooler for 90210. Kira Knightley was still a teenager when she got casted to play a mid-20-something in Love Actually. Jennifer Lawrence definitely was not old enough to play her character in American Hustle.

Idk... if you grew up in an environment where that's the norm, you're probably more likely to believe the "age is just a number" adage. I'm not excusing her because her stance is alarming as hell, but it might be something she's seen her whole life so to her, it's just be another Tuesday. I've also heard that at the time, if you're a lead actor with a certain status, you pretty much get veto power on the casting the female lead so it might also be a Bill Murray problem/demand.

okay bringing up grease is silly. grease was deliberately cast that way as a nod to how teenage roles were cast in the 50s/60s. that's literally The Point. the issue isn't "oh well she grew up in that environment" the issue is sofia def knew better and if she didn't then, she clearly should now. women are not fucking eternal children.
