At the time I was "Whatever" about it but now looking back I'm like "WTF were they thinking?"

i had one in high school that once had us write out who we would cast in a show then made a comment about how funny some of our casting decisions were.
i realized later i was one of the "funny" choices because she clearly told some of the seniors who cast themselves as what because my friend made a point to tell me that she cast me as a role i was gunning for, something i was too embarrassed to tell anyone.
then i had a nasty one in college i had to go to therapy over. he killed my interest in theatre.

these teachers sound like a bunch of failed bitter actors who had to pivot :/ not everyone will make it but being a tool isn't the wy to be.

Sorry you had to experience this :/ I can't help but think these teachers sound so bitter & jealous because they themselves have never made it (on screen) or are already past their prime and just want to kick down on others. I bet they did have a couple of favourite students, though, that they encouraged and rooted for to become successful... just so they could pat themselves on the back and claim that success was owed to them.

I wonder if they excuse it like 'we're just getting you prepared for the ~real world' or some such shit, but it's fucking awful.

Maybe I would’ve been happier as an artist in some other life, but as much as the corporate world sucks, I feel more confident in it than I ever did in the art world.
I despise how gleefully so many arts teachers (be it acting, visual, dance, etc) put down their students to “show you what the real world is like”. We were 11-18 year olds told year after year that we’re not good enough if we don’t do this, that, and the other. Tearing us down “to build us up”.
You’d think that if they went through that bullshit they’d teach us how to defend ourselves from that kind of abuse - especially when it came to our bodies.

This was similar to my experience too. I think some teachers had a attitude of thinking it would toughen us up but for many it left with them with crippling insecurities and long lasting damage.

I stage managed two shows for the asshole that sent me to therapy and I learned from a classmate I wasn't even supposed to be allowed to stage manage the first one since people weren't supposed to stage manage the musical and the straight play the same year. It's just no one wanted to work with him and he was the one who was in charge of stage crew.
