It lacks appeal for men cause it’s “girly” therefore deemed inferior, news @ 11.

Honestly, I don’t care about movie stars, just gimme me genuinely good looking dudes leading romcoms, I’m tired of Glenn Powell looking dudes being shown as some sort of male ideal when they look like a thumb with features. A sizable portion of the people presented as hot by Hollywood are just white and skinny (and tall) and it’s annoying as fuck. I’m thirsty for HOT male representation in romcoms.

I don't even care about that tbh. Just give me chemistry and good writing.
One of my favorite rom coms in Enough Said, with James Gandolfini and Julia Louis Dreyfus.

Omg they were so fucking cute together in that movie

They truly were. Gandolfini was always playing though guys and he was so charming as a regular Joe.

And Julia is just pure charisma.

Yeah, we don't care about stars. Give us chemistry and charisma, and at least a half-decent plot, and it's going to become a hit by recs.

What’s funny is that I think rom-coms are often dismissed as “formulaic” by so many men, too. Or they reduce them as “chick” flicks. And the former can definitely be true in that so many of them can rely on a formula (good or bad) - but the irony is that so many super hero movies have become just as formulaic too. And my fav genre, horror, can be super formulaic. But sometimes that formula is comforting to me.

And there are always those gems that stand out just as “good” movies regardless of their genre.

I’m like you in that I don’t care really to have huge movie stars in movies - but I also do like when I see actors not afraid to dabble into multiple genres to flex their skills.

i hear this too and tbh formulaic isn't necessarily a bad thing. if I'm going to see a rom com, I know what I'm signing up for. it's not the appropriate place to have like some massive dark twist or something - of course twists are fun, but ultimately I just want to watch two people fall in love, and get into hijinks, and end up together lol that's the comfort of the genre and it's okay to just lean into that rather than reinvent the wheel into something it doesn't need to be

I don’t feel romcom actors have to be attractive as they have to be boyishly handsome and sooooooo charming. No one would call Tom Hanks a fox but that doesn’t stop him from being a goat of romcoms.

Idt they have to be attractive either (especially since sex appeal is pretty subjective) but mostly, I hate how the default for romcom lead is white male, even when those white males don't hold a candle to Tom Hanks' charm, for example.

I don’t think it helps that I genuinely get jake picking & glenn powell confused. I am defending glenn because he might be ugly but I found him charming except that’s jake. Now I have no clue how much charm glenn has but he just comes off as smarmy which isn’t good for a romcom lead.

If Billy Crystal can be a rom com lead any dude can.

I love WHMS but I wanna make it clear that I do NOT SUPPORT THAT CASTING AT ALL. I'd love a remake with a dude who doesn't have Billy's creepy uncle energy tbh.

While I do agree about Glenn Powell, I have to say the rom com with him and Zooey Deutsch was really cute. It felt reminiscent of the early 2000s rom coms. I think because they both had great chemistry and charm together.

I agree. In a sea of mediocre romcoms since the last ten to fifteen years, it´s a highlight
