I feel like the people in the movie didn't do anything that outrageous to warrant the hate the main dude felt for them

That was probably just Emerald Finnell's natural rich person bias thinking all the poors inevitably hate the rich lol

Given the unimaginative yet pretty style of Emerald's previous work (Promising young woman) and her general background, I think one could argue that it's essentially a reflection of how a lot of rich people think - they see middle-class folks as greedy people who can't be happy leading a simple, comfy life, they want the lavish, extravagant lifestyle of the rich even tho it's not ~meant for them. Not to say this is a reflection of how she feels but zero surprise there if it was.

But honestly, Idt there was an actual message, the whole thing just felt like the musings of a tryhard rich woman with a solid cast, a very talented cinematographer & too much money on her hands. Great gowns, beautiful gowns and all that.

i got some tiktok video from a brit and the movie is about someone who wants to jump social classes and will stop at nothing to get it. in reality, Oliver would never reach the upper echelons of felix's family.

Yeah the minute you [Spoiler (click to open)]find out he’s comfortably middle-class, it changes the narratives. But another user who’s from the UK said it’s commentating on the class issues between the middle class trying to infiltrate the really upper class iirc.

Yeah I agree. I think it would’ve been interesting how the plot not been so spoonfed and predictable.

That's what it reminded me of! I kept thinking that there's been some show with this idea recently but couldn't remember which one
