my french friends/family have always talked about how awful he is, but he’s so ubiquitous in the film industry over there i think the french elite thinks an attack on him is an attack on the whole french film industry

He is one of quintessential French movie stars of the 80s and 90s. He has done classic French movies, especially earlier in his career, and is a great actor. As it turns out though, a garbage human being so out he goes.

nobody is saying they highly regard him; people didn't understand you were joking (it was pretty unclear it was a joke tbh), and were simply trying to earnestly answer your question about where he stands. pretty much everyone responding to you made it clear they also despise and condemn his actions.
