He probably did, lol. Back then if you weren't careful at this time of year people would rob you for whatever they could....money, boots, clothes, etc. People would literally walk around trashed and that made them prime pickings for thieves and people down on their luck who saw an opportunity and took it. :(

yup, there’s a reason the puritans banned christmas! aside from being killjoys. and why it was reinvented as a family-focused holiday. wassailing could take a turn for the violent, and the rich increasingly did not like the poor imposing on them, let alone threatening them. the role-reversal and carnival-like aspects of the holidays (which it has in common with saturnalia, though some people take exception to saying it’s a continuation of saturnalia, even if the feast of calends was a thing during the early church) like the lord of misrule were banned by protestants.

though, if you think about santacon, you can kinda see their point.
