saw maestro and i HATED it!! i'm shocked by all the rave reviews. i thought it was so boring, paced so weirdly, and barely about music at all. during the scenes with actual conducting it was good but everything else felt SO forced try-hard, you could just feel bradley screaming for an oscar. i'm not usually a richard brody fan but his review in the new yorker was spot on. such a weird, weird movie.

Just listened to the NPR PCHH ep about it (haven't watched it myself yet) and they said pretty much the same thing! Doesn't make me want to give it a try.

"and barely about music at all" this is why it's an awful biopic!! you're making a movie about BERNSTEIN and you're too afraid to tackle the nebulous, existential themes that are required when someone has dedicated so much of their time and is almost synonymous with an art form. it's is totally, totally the wrong lens to look at the subject through. disappointing doesn't even cover it. that's why Tar's focus on Bernstein was so good - they got it.
