in a good way!

“Obviously it [Riverdale being over] frees up more time for projects like May December, but I learned so much being there. I formed relationships that I will have until the end of my days. It really helped me refine this work ( Read more... )

People clown soaps and teen dramas but they're actually good training grounds for new actors.

I like what he says here too:

“I do have certain exercises that can separate the character from myself, and as I’m discovering how I like to work, I’m finding my technicality means I have the freedom to just let go. I don't need to suffer.” So no method acting then? “The idea of causing suffering and pain to others around you, in order to tell your story for the character…” He pauses and holds up his mug. “That is not my cup of chamomile tea.”

Like his appearance changed but not so drastically like others have done so before.

I think this shows that method acting is definitely getting a bad reputation in hollywood, it shouldn't automatically be associated with others suffering... but here we are

I never really understood how it became a thing top actors do. I guess in film school it must be paraded because all of the written roles with method acting it was always played as a joke to me

I mean I think it has to do with how Marlon Brando did it and was considered to be one of the people who helped cement the difference between stage and film acting, and method was his way of acting in a way that enabled closeups. IIRC at least two of the top acting schools focus on method acting, and the Actors Studio (from "Inside the Actors Studio") also trains people on it.

I forget who said it but they made a point that you only see people go full method when they play assholes

They sure are. If you can manage to realistically deliver the awful lines you're obligated to, chances are you could do wonders with a script that's actually good.

yeah I remember michelle williams talking about how dawson's creek was like that for her (And it shows - she absolutely sucked at the beginning but was great by the end)

Soap actors are the only actors I respect 🫡

I get that sometimes as an actor, you take jobs you aren't really proud of, especially in the early days of your career, but I would much rather hear something like "I learned a lot" than "OMG I am so embarrassed that I did that role" (as some people have said of various projects).

Soaps and teen shows might not be the most prestigious job, but they definitely teach you the nuts and bolts of how to survive acting on a set. I remember Sarah Michelle Gellar talked about how being on a soap taught her to memorize a lot of lines quickly.

i believe Todd Haynes & Julianne even mentioned this in an interview recently, about how Julianne's work on daytime TV in the 80s made her really adept as an actress/professional later on
