It didn't come out this year but reading The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was a mistake. Oof that was a bad read which is a shame because I enjoyed the original trilogy.

It was a pretty meh reading year overall though. Next year should already be better with the next Stormlight Archive book coming out at end of 2024.

fwiw i was one of the ones who liked it! it’s very different from the original trilogy in ways that really worked for me but i can see why others might not have clicked with it. i’m rereading the original trilogy now and one big difference is that katniss is such a lovable protagonist to spend time in her head with - you just can’t not root for her, collins totally sells IMO that the capitol falls in love with her because you as a reader do too - whereas TBOSAS is very much the opposite of that by design. it’s a very cold book. i also think TBOSAS is kind of more ambitious in some ways than the original trilogy and maybe struggles under the weight of what it’s attempting - for me i found its project interesting enough that i ended up pretty forgiving of its flaws but i can see other people not have patience for it.

I hated it the first time I read it but read it again earlier this year and quite enjoyed it :)

I loved it tbh so give it a try. The quotes at the beginning of that book is what sets the plot and the importance of that prequel imo. S. Collins is amazing imo and has written one of the best distopia of that last decade.

The book had such a good concept, but Collins relied so much on telling rather than showing. I read somewhere she likes to stick to a particular structure, and you could tell the story needed to breathe, but she suffocated it.
