I couldn't stand this book. The movie was mildly better because the house was pleasant to look at. I don't really get the point of the changes that were made since I didn't think they added anything to the overall story or character development. The character of Julia Roberts' and Ethan Hawke's daughter was written to be much more annoying than I remember her being in the book, and the young actress who portrayed her gave a pretty dismal performance.
On the plus side, some parts of it were very visually appealing and the use of indoor and outdoor space was very effective. Kevin Bacon was a creepy highlight. The music made me head over to Spotify to revisit some old classics that I hadn't thought about in a minute.
My biggest criticism was that it didn't need to be as long as it was. It took about as long to get started as it did in the book, but the pace was really draggy and slow. I get it was going for a slow burn, but it really could've been streamlined by about 45 minutes and it might have improved it overall. Much like ( ... )

it's sort of an extreme "what if the US had a massive cyberattack against it" disaster movie told from the POV of people who are outside the city and don't realize what's wrong / have to figure out what's happening
