As a Sufjan fan of 15+ years, my favorite album this year was Javelin. It's a perfect amalgamation of so many of the sounds he's experimented with over the years and his songwriting is great as always.
I also really enjoyed My Back Was a Bridge For You to Cross by ANOHNI and the Johnsons, The Record by boygenius, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We by Mitski (huge improvement over Laurel Hell IMO), Laugh Track by The National, and Heaven is a Junkyard by Youth Lagoon.
I love Sufjan, and while the album is still very sad it somehow seems more hopeful to me. I can’t explain it but he just sounds more sure. It feels lighter, even in the sad moments. Shit Talk is my favorite song of the year.
I'm listening to Javelin right now. I didn't listen to it enough before, which is strange as Carrie & Lowell is one of my favourite albums ever, it means SO much to me. I need to explore more of his back catalogue.
