i think what's so off-putting about these last couple of seasons, especially this latter half, is that it's not really history. like i'm nearly certain there was an ONTD post about kate's scandalous runway look or roundabouts, and there have been tons of posts here about their messy ass hookup. and i can't wait to see them turn it into some fairytale true love bullshit when we had literal posts here for years before their marriage about his random hookups and how she waited for years for his ass to get dumped and settle for her

how is it history if we've been discussing it here for years as they happen? it's jarring

Yeah I lost interest when it got to the 90's. Like, I remember Camilla and Charles being in the news all the time (even in the US) and when Diana died. And everything after has been so recent and like you said, we've been discussing and gossiping about it for years.

I genuinely learned stuff in the first few seasons, I knew nothing about Elizabeth or Philip's early life or British politics. The episode about Aberfan is one of my favorites.

same, the earlier seasons you felt like you were involved in intimate family moments or historical events. i lost interest around season 4 when we encountered events that have been covered ad nauseam by tabloids. diana’s introduction was kind of the beginning of the end for me.

Yeah, I think it moved from being a period drama with some distance in it to something too many of us remember like it was yesterday

I mean, technically it is history. heh. Just because a lot of people currently remember it given its relative closeness to time, it doesn't strip it of its historical value. Every other even in their history was tweaked, enhances, or romanticized and this doesn't seem any more different. If anything, I just miss all the lushness of the period costumes from before and stuff.

there is something to be said about recreating very recent history, but i think Pete Morgan got scared off by the royals and their friends bashing the show. it's one thing to discuss or portray things that happened to Elizabeth in the 60s/70s/80s bc like. never complain, never explain. it's history and it's been litigated and so many of the ppl involved are gone or don't care to leak to the press. it's much different when Camila and Charles spent 20 years rehabbing their image, when they literally had Kate cosplaying Diana (in a way using her sons to reclaim Diana for the monarchy and whitewashing some of the more...tumultuous history there).

and so all this shit coming back to light in the 2020s when Charles ascended to the throne and the war of words with Harry and Meghan, the royals and the royalists had their say and Morgan fell in line. to the extreme detriment of the show.

also bc it's mostly just relationship drama now. The earlier seasons dealt more with how the Queen and the people around her reacted to larger events in the UK and the world, politics etc. Now it's just uptight people being angry at each other.

Of course they'll make it seem like a fairy tale romance and gloss over all the times they were photographed drunk in the back of taxi cabs, and how Kate went through all of his University friends when William dumped her and tried to get other women to date him.

It will end so conveniently before he starts his affair with Rose Hanbury. Lifetime should make a movie about that, they've done everything else.
