The episode is fun but dragging 10 and Donna out of retirement felt very much like the show has ran its course

It does feel very end of the shows run with all the memberberries.

See I see it as the opposite. It's injecting some life in to the show with returning favourites of not just diehards but casual viewers who have switched off over the years. I think it's pretty clever to get them back so people are engaged and are more likely to watch Ncuti.

so basically the moral of the story is "we have no confidence our chosen future for the franchise will appeal to viewers, so we have to tempt them in with comfort of the past"

You can have all the confidence in the world in Ncuti's abilities but if people have switched off and feel like jumping back in is going to be confusing then it makes total sense to go back to a duo who they probably saw right up until David left. Obviously people could switch off again once they leave but the fact is there will be millions of people who never would've tuned in if not for the Tennant lead in to the Christmas special. I've seen every episode since 9 and I haven't seen a reaction on social media or a promo campaign for the show like this in a decade so I guess it's worked? Ratings will be out tomorrow anyway :)

It's a children's show tying up a tragic loose end.

Yeah to me it feels like RTD starting off by correcting a bad choice. Which bodes well after moffat’s ego.

Moffat's problem imo is that he's an utter narcissist and believes he could do Doctor Who the bestest. Whereas RTD is a huge fanboy of the show itself and loves embracing specific things from his own childhood. He wants to produce the same feeling in 10 year olds that Doctor Who gave him as a kid.

It’s an anniversary special. They always involve nostalgia at the front and centre.

I understand why they did this, from a marketing perspective and to breath new life (and profit) into the IP, but it does turn me off from it, not going to lie.

But I’m excited for Ncuti, so if this needs to be done… the. sure

I feel like they don't have a lot of younger fans. A lot of people treat DW as either their parents or a Tumblr era show. So trying to gain traction with older viewers makes sense to me.

I liked it, but probably in part because of nostalgia for when I liked the show more

Definitely feels like a fine line, especially since RTD is in charge again.

If it had been a multi-doctor, multi-parter led by 13/Jodie & 10/14/David with a sneaky first outing for 15/Ncuti, I think I would have liked it more. We could have got a resolution for Donna and some fresh interactions. But as much as the (first) RTD era of New Who probably holds up as the best period, I feel like they're playing it too safe. Especially when it's the 60th, go full multi-doctor craziness. If The Five Doctors could manage it in 1983 surely they can manage it now.
