Yeah, what Hardwicke doesn't say is that he was their #1 choice for Edward, the studio wanted him precisely because he had been Cedric. They expected Cedric to show up for the audition, but it had been filmed two years earlier and he wasn't that fresh-faced boy any more. He didn't look as bad as she's describing, tho. He had just finished filming Little Ashes and his hair was dyed black, that's basically the difference. Summit sent him the script 6 months before he auditioned but he read it and thought it was crap, so he didn't audition. Then he got his tax bill for his HP4 salary and he had already spent all the money, as a 20 year old does, and didn't have money to pay the taxes. He finally broke down and auditioned for Twilight, thinking it was a little indie no one would see and he was desperate for the cash.

I think the problem was that they expected to see 16 year old Cedric Diggory walk in, and they got 20 year old Rob, with dyed black hair, looking like he just woke up. Producers don't have the best imaginations.
