I think we’re too in it now to properly be able to tell her level of fame compared to others, and also its such a different ball game now with internet/social media. We’ll probably have a clearer view in 10/20 years.
I disagree. There are people who lived through the heights of fame of MJ, Madonna, and Beatlemania and they can confidently assess her popularity doesn’t match theirs. To be clear, that’s not at all a knock on Taylor: what she’s built for herself is impressive on its its own. In general, the fact that we’re using the fame of these other artists as the metric kinda makes the point.
The only difference being, a lot of the general public knew all the Madonna songs…I doubt that is true of Taylor Swift songs (not even knocking her; media is just consumed differently today)
yea. Her stans will throw streaming numbers in your face or crazy demand of tickets, but you're average joe might be able to name like a handful of taylor songs, rather than someone like mj or madonna who you can raddle off hits for days.
I am 44 so wasn't alive to assess the Beatles, but while I don't think she's as big as MJ, I hope she leaves him in the dust eventually. She might not be a saint but afaik she has never assaulted kids
You simply cannot compare the levels of fame now to anyone who made it pre-social media and the 24 hour news cycle. It's impossible. The media landscape and fandom is so drastically different it makes no sense to seek a 1 to 1.
TS is incredibly famous right now. I don't know why her fans need her to be more famous than someone who entered the industry in the 60s.
You put TS in the 80's and she wouldn't have gone anywhere. She might have been ok in the country music scene but I think the likes of Reba and other female artists would have kicked her ass to the curb.
She's no Madonna. I can name a list of Madonna songs and I'm not even a fan. I'm not a fan of TS either and I can't name a single song of hers.
I'll admit TS is hugely famous right now but I will never understand it. Her songs are juvenile and her singing voice is mediocre at best. I give her credit for making the $$$ and capitalizing on her fame but there's no way she's in league with MJ, Madonna, The Beatles, etc.
TS has really benefitted from using the media in a way that artists could not in the 80s. Also, there is no way she would be able to connect with fans in the same way pre-social media. She would have had to navigate the industry very differently.
