November 15, 2023 Excerpt from a new oral history of The OC published by Vanity Fair recounts the decision to kill off Marissa Cooper at the end of the show’s third season.
Some tidbits include:
- Most of the cast and crew now think it was a mistake to kill off Marissa and that the show never recovered
- The OC creator Josh Schwartz thought killing off Marissa would reinvigorate the show but now thinks he lacked imagination at the time and should have instead hooked Marissa up with Seth or had her reunite with Luke
- Mischa Barton had a lot of frustration during the run of the show and felt overworked but was sad the character was killed off
- Executive producer Stephanie Savage cried while watching the scene when Marissa dies and cried again when recently recounting it for the book
