'Night Time, My Time,' Sky Ferreira's hard-won debut album, turns 10

On the heels of news that Sky Ferreira may be finally free from Capitol Records, it's time to revisit the sole album she managed to release under the label: her critically lauded, dark and stormy debut Night Time, My Time.

After failing to live up to Capitol's next-gen Britney expectations, Ferreira spent nearly four years on the shelf before Night Time, My Time hit stores on November 5, 2013*. Recorded, mixed and mastered over several weeks that August, the album was largely funded by money Ferreira earned from modeling gigs after the label pulled its support.

Ferreira's indignation is palpable across Night Time, My Time's 12 tracks, produced by Ariel Rechtshaid, her bewilderment brilliantly captured by Gaspar Noé in its controversial cover shot (censored here, #FreeTheNipple). When on "I Will" she warns, Try to teach me a lesson, I'll keep you guessing, you believe her.

Night Time, My Time connected with critics and listeners. A modern cult classic, it landed on multiple year-end best of lists and was named one of the best albums of the 2010s the likes of Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and Spin.
