This may be a dumb question but as someone that hardly likes alcohol (not even wine) and only a light Mojito here and there, do alcoholics truly LOVE the taste of alcohol eventually like „omg this pure vodka tastes amazing, just like ice tea) or is it more like „ugh I hate drinking it, it’s disgusting in my mouth“ but the body craving it is stronger. I just can’t imagine it tasting good, just like cigarettes (the passive smell it leaves on one’s clothes is already enough for me to not even try) like does a cigarette taste like sweets to chain smokers?? or again a matter of „my body NEEDS it but I actually hate the taste“

Speaking as someone who drinks quite a bit (and needs to cut down - currently on that path), those first few glasses are delicious. But after that it's drinking for drinkings sake.

I used to smoke and again, it was always enjoyable the first few. But now I've quit I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke - it makes me want to vomit.

Im not an alcoholic but this is an interesting question. My assumption is that it’s not the taste but the crave and addiction that feeling of high when you are drunk.

I’ve used alcohol as a way to de compress and eliminate stress as well as to overcome social events.

I don’t particularly like the taste of alcohol but I like the feeling that comes with it. Just feeling at ease.

I’ve never gotten blackout drunk but I’ve gotten wasted a few times.

Alcoholism runs in my family so I know my
limits

I've never really had issues going to parties sober and I've never been drunk so I can't say whether or not being drunk is worth it but as someone who hates the taste of alcohol I never really got it. I don't know if I'm more sensitive to the taste but anytime I've had a "good drink" or a "you can't taste it" it's never been good. I can always taste it and even if the rest of the flavors are great it's immediately worsened by the underlying alcohol flavor.

as a fellow non drinker who just hates the taste of alcohol, i've always wondered this. it always burns my throat and tastes like medicine if anything to me. i also get an upset stomach when i drink too, so no. i've never drank so much to have a hangover though.

This too. I always get stomach cramps later that night and 💩💩💩 the following day. #toomuchinfo

Sometimes I wonder if I am allergic to alcohol. Does that make sense? Like I said, I rarely drink but when I do, my face usually turns red, itchy and peeing burns slightly #toomuchinfoagain

My Mom is allergic to something in alcohol. Just less than a tablespoon and her body gets red, similar to an allergic reaction

I can’t speak for alcoholics but my friend is a casual drinker who really loves whiskey. She’s a connoisseur who knows all these different brands and seeks them out and talks about how smooth some are and how much she loves the initial burn and stuff like that? So she genuinely loves the taste. But she also refuses to be drunk in public lol she’ll get one glass and sip all night.

I don’t get it either though. Whiskey tastes the way Pine Sol smells to me 🤷🏽‍♀️

I can’t stand Whiskey either. Maybe it’s one of those cases like loving or hating cilantro or the sugar substitute in soda

I like drinking and drink more than I probably should on weekends so here's my take: It depends on the type of alcohol and the quality. Nothing bottom shelf tastes acceptable. There's certain alcohols I can drink by themselves like whiskey but I prefer to mix vodka and most standard tequilas with something (really good expensive tequila I can drink alone).

I couldn't speak to filling a craving like that, though. The only time I really crave alcohol, it's Friday evenings and usually I have a specific restaurant or activity in mind to do with my bf or a friend so I'll just think "oooh I really want a hot whiskey rn" or whatever particular drink is associated with what I'd like to do. And not so sure if it's the alcohol I'm really craving or the excitement of not working for 2 days :/

I think it tastes like shit but wine is palatable enough for me to drink and it’s the feeling of being goofy and relaxed and not caring or overthinking that’s extremely appealing. I don’t really drink but this past year was the first time in my life I felt myself craving that feeling so I haven’t had a drink since.

Oh my god this happened to me over the last 2 weeks. Just in a lot of social situations where there happened to be alcohol. I was finally relaxed (had been stressed af for weeks about other things), fell asleep easily because I had a bit of a buzz. Then the days that followed, I was anxious in the morning wondering if I should drink that night. Ultimately I was too lazy to go out to find some wine, but it really spooked me.

The feeling is very alarming when it happens! Making sure I deny that urge has been what’s helped me avoid dependency, honestly!

Not an alcoholic but former weekend binge drinker that recently had a blood test signal for alcoholic hepatitis and cut back to zero alcohol:

I actually did like the taste. My go-to’s were gin or whiskey. I also really like beer. Fortunately there are non-alcoholic beer options that I can sip on. Plus this fabulous non-alcoholic bar opened up in my city this year. I have been there a few times and it’s been a safe haven for when I want a fancy drink that isn’t just juice or soda.

I love myself a nice „Mosquito“ (which is a Mojito without alcohol)

I will have to order that next time I’m out. lol usually I just ask for a Shirley temple if the bar or restaurant doesn’t have a non-alcoholic cocktail menu.
