I think he said she was a soulmate and there for him during his bouts with addiction? Like she would check on him regularly. I didn’t get the sense he was in love but he was lonely.

He knew her years before they were on 'Friends' and asked her out but she said no. He said when something good happened in his life, the first person he wanted to tell was her. The way he spoke about her just seemed really affectionate. He didn't really talk about Courtney much or his feelings towards her so maybe he omitted that but I feel like fans of 'Friends' just wanted them to be in love with each other in real life.
