Fellow Travelers, a miniseries based on the 2007 fictional novel of the same name by Thomas Mallon and starring Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey, premiered on Oct 27 on Paramount+ with Showtime
It centers on the decades-long romance between two men who first meet during the height of McCarthyism in the 1950s.

It's weird, I'm not saying that only gay actors should play gay characters and it's probably fine if you only need to play romantic scenes and cut to postcoital bliss but there is something different here .

I wonder if it's not just that they are gay actors playing gay characters but the level of out that they have been afforded in their career and work so that they could also be comfortable, natural being gay characters on screen. Which in turn has an effect on how the performance is received by an audience.
The audience also knows these are gay men playing gay characters so there is none of the distraction of whether or not they are authentic and performances can be more fully appreciated.

The suspension of disbelief doesn't have to work as hard.
