I liked the unrealistic aspect, that's part of the romcom manual. Nowhere has cute small town neighbors or even friends getting them together, that's purely fiction but also very fun. But then again my coworkers absolutely do not get homosexuality, but they're nosey and match-makey enough that they'll at least get excited and try and inquire any time I mention a woman I might be interested in - though they stop short of trying to devise situations to get us together. Just every time we chat outside of work they ask about my love life and "that girl (you) talked about" and they've even asked to see photos. They're trying at least.

To my reading of the the film, the former love of his life isn't actually gay, he just loves his best friend and tries to give it a shot because he loves his friend/wants them both to be happy. I don't think he's repressed, just less flexible than he hoped. I think we've all been with a person who confused platonic affection with sexual attraction 🙃 And the two of them were both grieving, which can double mess up emotional awareness.

Actually, one did try to set up a situation - she wanted to put me at the singles table at her wedding so I could meet someone. I asked if she actually knew any other gay women besides me, and she actually went to ask her fiance if there was anyone gay on the guest list - there wasn't, lol. But an attempt was made. My labmates are from fairly homophobic countries/small towns but sometimes people make exceptions for friends and neighbors.
