Sofia Coppola talks to Rolling Stone about franchises and original blockbusters.
"I’m so happy that there’s movies that aren’t superheroes. I mean, no offense [to those movies]. I’m just happy that people are going to the theaters again."

October 25, 2023 Highly suggest people read the whole interview because even though it's short it's interesting!
- She was working on her retrospective book so she was aware that she was repeating a lot with Priscilla but is comfortable with it
- Always aligned with the teen experience but now that she's a mother of teens she feels like the villain in their life cause they're pushing against her
- Is diplomatic about Barbie and Taylor Swift but clearly doesn't care about either one of them. On Barbie "I’m glad that it was so successful and made for an audience of girls and women." On Swift "It's not my generation".
- Says people think she was just handed a career but she had to fight to be taken seriously so she doesn't like joking about being a nepo baby.* Later with no self-awareness she mentions George Lucas casting her in Star Wars cause she wanted to visit the set.
- Interviewer brings up Bill Murray's abuse allegations. Coppola has positive experiences with Bill Murray but she says women should be believed and people show different aspects of themselves to different people
- Would be comfortable with Priscilla being her last movie but her husband says she says that after every movie
- She was refused permission to use Elvis' songs but she only planned to use 2 or 3 anyway
- Took one meeting to direct one of the last Twilight films but didn't connect with it and found the grooming/imprinting weird
- Execs asked her why a 35 year old man would watch her version of The Little Mermaid and she didn't know what to say. Says this is often the case with financiers who are mostly straight white guys looking for movies that will appeal to them.
source *TBF I do remember for years there were sexist rumours her dad directed The Virgin Suicides.
