it's so annoying how his fans characterize his music as whimsical or say mystical adjacent, but it's clearly inspired by blues. it's like how people characterize Mitski or Sufjan and similar artists as just "sad" music, flattening complex emotions and interiority into a consumable label. boring!

what's interesting to me about an artist like sufjan is that his career is super lengthy at this point and it has such a broad spectrum of sounds produced (not to mention that his lyrics are often political, biographic, etc), but by and by large his own fanbase still just characterises him as "sad" - and this is a fanbase that spent 20 odd years obsessed with the idea of outing him (wonder if any of them regret that now)

how can anyone listen to Impossible Soul or like BQE and think Sufjan's music is "sad" lmao. even his whimsical Christmas albums are full of such specific humor.

The first line of Impossible Soul makes me smile every time it's so funny. Hell, even his recent daily hospital updates are full of his very understated hilarity. Anyone who listens to the actual lyrics and influences in his music can’t be offended by these questions that were definitely pre-approved by him/his team.

I feel like a lot of the fans he gained over the pandemic are on the younger side / make a TikTok about “he winked at me at the concert and I saw him on Raya!” type, so this reaction tracks I guess. That being said, this came on my feed the other day lmao
