For sure, this season has shifted more to romantic plots, which outside of Ed and Stede and Lucius and Black Pete, we didn't need to go to that well. But I've enjoyed the crew dealing with the aftermath of the invasion and working through the trauma of that. It felt like they were bonding and growing, and that was an interesting perspective you wouldn't usually see in this type of historical narrative. Plus, Wee John in drag, Izzy seemingly evolving, Buttons going on a whole bird journey,... There has been a lot of tidbits for different people outside of Stede and Ed.
That said, I agree that Jim and Olu are getting the short end of the stick this season. That's definitely a shame because they both stood out in S1, especially Jim who had a complicated backstory. I think they had a lot of evolution last season so they turned the narrative on others this season. That's always the problem with that huge of a cast and 30-minute episodes; it's hard to service everyone equally. I definitely want more of the Pirate Queen too; my favourite new character this season.
Now I'm sitting here wondering if Buttons and Swede were ditched for cost savings this season lmao. But tbh I didn't notice either of them gone, particularly Buttons after his bird journey. I just wish they gave some better attention to Jim/Olu rather than just kinda handwaving off any resolution from season 1 and just suddenly having them be with others with no resolution to their relationship from season 1. Besides them saying Olu can't stop talking about Zheng when he hasn't said a damned thing about her since they left her ship lmao.
My guess is they felt they had to pare down the cast possibly for budgetary reasons, but also because with fewer episodes, it was hard to find screentime for everyone. Plus, given they moved filming from LA to NZ, maybe not all actors wanted to be there for weeks/months, especially if they weren't going to be filming a lot. They might have given them the option to have a more time-limited filming schedule.
Everything to do with Jim and Olu (and Archie and Zheng) would have benefitted from additional time to be developed, 100%.

I know Ivan went to Doggie Heaven between season 1 and season 2 because of the move.
