You find that brand of crazy in pretty much every fandom. It’s almost zur fannish equivalent of QAnon…echo chambers etc.

i'm sure there's no name for it yet but my pet theory is that parasocial relationships can exacerbate underlying/latent mental illness in some people. before the internet, parasocial relationships used to be much more difficult to establish so you didn't see the same level of unhinged fan behavior that's common even with no-name z-listers and youtubers now. today it's basically branding 101 to encourage fans to develop unhealthy parasocial relationships and i think it's resulting in a larger subset of fans becoming stalkers etc than 30 years ago.

And it's easier now to find people similar to you because of social media. So these same fans suffering the same "parasocial relationships" are talking to each other and encouraging each other. I'm sure a lot of them feel alone IRL so it's like they found their people. Chris, Taylor Swift, Timothee, etc etc loves them and is sending them signals!

There's now men committing crimes because their AI chatbot girlfriends have been encouraging them. So it's not even like there needs to be a real person on the other side, just an internet connection

That's how much men respect us, they'll follow their AI girlfriend's advice before they'll listen to real women

even their AI girlfriends want them to get arrested so they don't bother them anymore

100% it’s a strange type of escapism.

I suffered a bit from it in college with Kpop - not so unhinged as to think these Kpop stars cared about me but using it as an escape from reality. I saw far worse where some created whole fake relationship with these stars. The added social aspect is another factor - that was the true escapism. Connecting with other lost souls over a connected fixation.

It totally exasperated my own mental issues.

It's definitely not just one thing, there are a lot of layers here, but I think the situation you describe is also exacerbated by how many people feel really lonely, and I find that aspect of it really sad.

I’ve found myself in some unhealthy situations as well that I’ve thankfully moved on from but from experience I can say it was the worst when my mental health issues were not being addressed. it needs to be addressed in a more formal way for sure, but as most issues that mostly affect women it prob won’t be lol

My hottake is we’re seeing a type of arrested development thanks to social media and stan twitter. This is the behavior you have as an obsessed tween but people just arent growing out of it

This. Fans have always been insane to this level, but usually, except for a few, they grew out of it. Not anymore.
