The Power of 3 may set us free but it definitely ages me as Charmed officially turns 25!
Click to view-Charmed premiered today on October 7, 1998 on TheWB network starring tvs bad girl - Shannen Doherty as the unofficial lead, Holly Marie Combs, and Alyssa Milano who replaced newcomer Lori Rom at the last minute.
-The network expected Felicity who premiered a week beforehand to be the big hit but Charmed premiered to the networks biggest numbers (7.7mill viewers vs. Felicity's 7.1) until Smallville in 2001.
-The show would remain the networks 2nd highest rated show throughout its first 3 seasons and lack of promotion by the network would lead to plenty of frustration from cast & crew that would play out in the media long before any behind the scenes tensions between Shannen/Alyssa would rear its head.
-Spelling originally wanted Shannen to play Piper, Holly to play Phoebe, and a mystery actress that HMC refuses to reveal to play Prue.
-Shannen Doherty would have plenty of sway behind the scenes with her having Spelling swap her to Prue, Holly to Piper, alongwith threatening to walk if Holly was not hired. Before her departure at the end of Season 3 she had directed 3 episodes (2 finales) and choreographed a big dance scene in S3.
-Shannen/Alyssas famous feud would lead to Shannens eventually firing and hiring of Rose McGowan who played long lost sister Paige for the next 5 seasons
-Charmed would end its run after 8 seasons and be the longest running female ensemble cast in history before Desperate Housewives would pass them by 2 episodes.
-Despite the success of the show, it is largely ignored by the entertainment industry. No Paley Fest reunions, no EW reunion issue, no discussions of a revival series/movie despite all 4 actresses stating they would put differences aside to star in a reunion.
