[Spoiler (click to open)]I truly do not know where to begin... what the hell happened here?!? Two of the most talented young actors I can think of in a movie I've been looking forward to since it was announced, and I can't imagine I'll ever watch again or recommend it to a single person.
The script was probably the biggest issue, with the direction and editing following right behind. The film struggled to maintain any sense of coherence or tone, and even at 1:50 felt overly long.
Seeing this in a mostly full theater really drove home how thin the line is between comedy and drama. A good portion of the crowd started laughing aloud (approximately halfway through) at a scene that I think was supposed to read as intense and dramatic, but was just jarringly weird. After that, things just kept getting more and more (unintentionally) hilarious, so it was very hard to take the film seriously. Even the way Saoirse was laying on a rock (?) at one point had me stifling giggles so hard I was struggling to breathe. Not a great headspace for a sci-fi drama!
The positives:
- Paul and Saoirse are both gorgeous
- Loved the neutral wardrobes
- The song she plays on the piano is pretty
