who's expecting this book to be good?

but whatever, if it gets kids reading just bc it's millie, who cares. i just saw a tiktok of a 7th grade teacher talking abt how bad kids' levels are, they're at 4th grade level reading. in the comments there was a teacher talking abt how her class is reading lord of the flies and four chapters have taken them like 3 months to get through or smth, bc she has to keep dumbing things down. it's not even "why are the curtains blue?" and more "what color are the curtains?"

Reading comprehension (comprehension in general) has gone down significantly. Kids don't even ask why anymore

I notice this a lot on Reddit. There are a lot of teens on there (but I am sure a lot of them are adults, as well) and it is really bad.

They can't even have proper conversations with others at all. Always missing the point and going on about something that wasn't even mentioned. It's as frustrating as it is disheartening.

You're so right, and unfortunately it's all over the internet as far as I've seen. I have greatly reduced my internet presence in the past 10 years (and it was almost nonexistent in the first place) bc of it. It used to be so frustrating for me to talk to people missing the point until I started to work on my compulsive need to get the last word lol. I've almost had to convince myself that all of them are trolling even tho I know better. :(

I also noticed a new trend in conversations on reddit where people present their arguments with "I heard that...". That's so odd to me bacause a few years ago literally everyone in a conversation pretended to be an expert, and in general presented their statements as a hard fact. Idk how to interpret this honestly, but it's so noticeable to me, this unwillingness to be reaponsible for the information you volunteer

growing up consuming pop culture via tumblr the lack of know-it-alls & people who look way too deep into things is kinda bizarre. even fans aren’t analytical about stuff they like anymore, theyre just.. well fanatical

This is why I feel a lot of people just say whatever bs they've seen online and when asked where they heard about it they always say 'I saw it on TikTok'. They dgaf about anything anymore.

I feel like such an old but I noticed this like 10 years ago.

Instead of people just googling something themselves they would ask me and then just take my word.

Or would be like "Where did you hear that?" and like I had included a link to a real news source in my comment.

This happens to me a lot as a librarian. People call the ref desk asking me something random and I just google it and answer and nobody even questions it

To be fair I probably would trust whatever a librarian told me.

You have such a wholesome reputation!

It blows my mind that we're all carrying around pocked sized computers that would have been the size of a room back in the 50s and people still don't bother to look things up.

Maybe it's because I remember not having the Internet and the struggle to research things before it, but I'll never take it for granted. Of course not everything can be believed online but a bit of common sense and critical thinking is all you need.

And I'm not even talking about younger generations, plenty of people my age (Gen X) don't either. No interest in knowing why or how, even though it's all at our fingertips 🤷

I agree but if they don't even have basic critical thinking skills then having access to a computer becomes meaningless for them. There's a reason why people are taking things that are easily disprovable at face value.

It's the majority now tbh, we always cackle at our management "Google again got paywalled on the 30th floor"😂

My much younger sister-in-law once told me something very stupid so I gently asked where did you hear that? And she started screaming at me about how this wasn't school and she didn't need to cite her sources. ...well when you tell me the chocolate takes a thousand years to grow and it's extinct because we've picked it all, Yeah I kind of need your sources
*Edited to remove emojis I didn't even add??*

I was just ranting about comprehension and media literacy and how it's just not common enough, even among people who are considered intelligent.
