I watched Boogie Nights for the first time ever last night... it was fine? I enjoyed it, and thought it was fun and groovy (well, until it wasn't) but I am a little surprised so many people count it among the best movies ever.

It's so telling to me that he "regrets" doing that film. To me, it's the only performance he has ever been good in.

I think they wanted Leo DiCaprio for the part. And he supposedly said to the producers/director in a meeting; "I'm bigger than Leo." And dropped his pants to prove it.

I had the same reaction when I watched it a few years after it came out. I had heard all the hype about how it was the best movie EVAH so I kept waiting for it to get amazing and it was just...fine.
