I'm assuming one or both has/have someone else already line up. I wouldn't even know how to enter the dating game after that long, but if you randomly meet someone while married....I think it'd be easier to leave that way.

Mte. My aunt and her husband got a divorce after 35 YEARS because she realized that she just wanted to be alone. She’s much happier now and they remain a good friendship but I can’t lie that must be absolutely heartbreaking for the other person even if it is necessary. That is always a fear when you’re in a long term relationship

Their oldest is 18. Maybe this was a situation where they waited til their kids were grown to divorce

My friend is in that situation now, except her kids are under the age of 5. It sucks so bad.

Yeah, they're not technically married so that makes things a little trickier from a legal standpoint I think. It's a bummer to see her older kid acting out in aggressive/bullying ways for attention. He definitely knows something's up.

i feel like this is more commonly the case when there is a financial/asset dependency. With rich celebs I expect it less but who knows

Maybe they were together for the kids and it became more of a roommate/brother-sister dynamic. I know a few couples like that and as soon as their last kid turns 18 those marriages will be done. It's sad that people have convinced themselves that they need to fake it like that for their children and "not breaking up the home" when the actual best thing is for everyone to be happy.

Not to be bleak but mum didn't divorce my stepdad because she couldn't afford to

But in the end they genuinely cared about each other. Idk if it was romantic, it really didn't appear that way. But when my stepdad was in the nursing home she called every day at 4pm. Mum played board games with him while he was still home and dialysis took 11hr. They'd go to bed around 8pm and she'd sit on the bed with him and keep him company.

His death was really hard on her. Like she lost her life companion. Not because they were actually happy, but they were married for over 30yr.

Plus mum never would've left him to suffer kidney failure and eventual organ failure alone.
