MTV saw its highest-rated VMAs in three years among the 18-49 demographic with a 1.03 (compared to a 0.58 in 2020), according to early data from Nielsen. Among adults 18-34, the show saw its best rating since 2019, up 118% to a 1.14. The show also saw 37% growth in total viewers year-over-year with 865,000 people tuning in to watch the show, versus 630,000 last year. These numbers are fast nationals, which means that final data will be available later Wednesday (and the totals are likely to go up).

While these ratings are definitely an improvement, it doesn't even come close to their ratings peak back in 2011 when Beyoncé reveled her pregnancy after "Love on Top" and Lady Gaga performed as Jo Calderon: that show pulled a massive 12.4 million viewers that year.
