J. August Richards and his partner Josh Gbor invited their friends and family to celebrate August's 50th birthday and then had a surprise wedding at the party. They met two years ago and got engaged in February 2023. Josh and his twin brother Jason are in a band and they also have a fashion line. Richards is best known for his roles on Angel, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Conviction, and Unzipped.

WE GOT MARRIED, Y'ALL!!! For my 50th birthday, I wanted to celebrate the places that historically make me who I am: Africa, the Caribbean, Panama, and the United States. The theme was carnival - as if all those places had a single, epic event. We played Reggeaton, Afrobeats, and Gogo. We served shrimp 'n grits, oxtails, and vegan jambalaya. In the middle of the party, we announced that we were getting married and surprised our guests with a wedding. It was the most magical night of our lives...

On the exact same night in Nigeria, 67 people were arrested for attending what police say was a gay wedding. It was a reminder that some of the places that made us who we are, don't always celebrate ALL that we are... Therefore we want to dedicate our ceremony to the people of the African Diaspora and all around the world living in countries where it is illegal or unsafe to be LGBTQ... While I am grateful to be living in a country where I am able to publicly and legally marry my soulmate, we still have so much work to do to ensure the rights and safety of the entire community and our allies. We are grateful to the activists who came before us and praying for the safe release of the 67 human beings arrested in Nigeria. We thank you deeply for the love and well wishes...

* note: according to CNN, 200 people were arrested at the Nigerian wedding but ~only 67 of them are being prosecuted

Of course the question ONTD has: who was at the wedding?

Non-Buffyverse celebrities who attended the wedding:

Don Cheadle, Dayna Lynne North, Colman Domingo, James Lesure, Sarah Wayne Callies, Henry Simmons, Cornelius Smith Jr., and Austin Wintory

Who from the Buffyverse was at the wedding?

Alyson Hannigan, Alexis Denisof, Amy Acker, and Joss Whedon

Whedon's presence was especially surprising because back in 2021, J. August Richards publicly supported Charisma Carpenter after she came forward with allegations about Joss's behavior towards her on Angel (she had already spoken publicly about the situation before, but her 2021 statement got a lot more publicity because it was made in support of Ray Fisher's allegations against Whedon).

Buffy alumni who posted public support but whose tweets are no longer available:

Marti Noxon (it looks like she deleted her Twitter account):
I would like to validate what the women of Buffy are saying and support them in telling their story. They deserve to be heard. I understand where @AllCharisma, Amber, Michelle and all the women who have spoken out are coming from.

David Boreanaz (his tweets are now protected and I don't follow him):
I am here for you to listen and support you. Proud of your strength.

Jose Molina (Firefly):
"Casually cruel" is a perfect way of describing Joss. He thought being mean was funny. Making female writers cry during a notes session was especially hysterical. He actually liked to boast about the time he made one writer cry twice in one meeting.
