I was about to say "different times and I am sure almost every man made jokes like that back in the day" but as I was typing this, I realised that it does not make it any better or right

I was going to say the same thing. He might not have even meant this but culture was very Maxim at the time and commenting on the hotness of a 15 year old was not unusual.

mte, im three years younger than duff and watched punk'd all the time when i was 13-15 and it's sad to think that i definitely was like "well that's just how they joke" back then, i still carry that lingering excuse around with me even though i know now how awful that was to hear as a young teen

yup. even though it was more normalized doesn’t mean they weren’t gross like yeah it was the norm but it was fucked and a lot of us are fucked up because of this and that’s why we call it now. And imagine how they talked in private if this is public and proud. His comments about mila when she was 14/15 feels too much of a pattern.

pretty much. there were things i said and did back when i was younger and it wasn't okay then and it wouldn't be okay now. all we can do is better now that we know better.

IA. The truth is, this is just sadly how women and young girls were talked about in the media by EVERYONE back then, not just Ashton. It's not just him we should even be having this conversation about, it was on a whole that men - people in general - were talking about girls this way. As someone around Hilary's age, I remember feeling flattered by comments like that bc it validated me in the way media told me I should be validated and it is something that I'm still undoing 15+ years later

every man back then also knew those jokes were inappropriate bc if someone said this about their sister they would’ve beaten them up

it's sad and pathetic that the only way most men can start to understand misogyny is if you relate it to their mother or sister. and even then it doesn't move the needle much

it doesn't make it ok but I'm not looking to drag him for it either tbh. maybe I'm an apologist or maybe ontd makes me feel defensive of casual bad behaviour that was normal at the time. and like, the mila/ashton video is cringe, and the letter writing was wrong, and not calling the cops on discovering your murdered girlfriend is perplexing, (i know, i know, the list is long!!!) but i feel like all these things are examples of stupidity and the failings of human nature rather than true villainy. idk, maybe i have problems lol
