I’m not trying to discount her experience but from conversations with my physician and dietitian friends the scary stories about your metabolism grossly slowing down after you’re 30 and then 40 are greatly exaggerated. It’s minimal.

I think they also refer to muscle mass, which does drop after 30
I think it's like between 3-8% per decade after 30

Well your whole metabolism does slow down with age, your body doesn't regenerate the same
Broken bones don't heal as fast
The real drop is at 60 though not 30

the drop in muscle mass can be prevented/reversed with resistance based exercise - basically until 30 your body just hangs onto it and afterwards it becomes “use it or lose it.” (this is probably my biggest motivator to exercise honestly and i wish more people talked about it!)

I wouldn't go as far as saying it can be prevented (not completely at least)

It can be reduced but at some point the body ages, and that's ok too

My mother exercises everyday (she does competitive coastal rowing) but she's also 70 and her muscle mass just isn't the same

She has great core strength though

yes, that’s true, i oversimplified. but it can be slowed by a lot, and genuinely staved off for a while - it’s possible to have more muscle mass at 40 than you did at 30. (probably this also depends on your history to some degree… if you were a competitive bodybuilder young maybe 30 is your peak but as a near-lifelong couch potato i am definitely stronger and almost definitely have more muscle mass at 35 than i did at any point before, and from what i’ve picked up from fitness reddit (lol) if i keep doing what i’m doing i can expect that trend to continue at least a couple more years.)

I’m not 40 yet but I’m close. I will say my body in general no longer recovers like it used to. I can see how metabolism is involved in everything slowing down.
But it’s just knowing an injury/illness now will actually set me back some days until I recuperate but I would literally walk shit off in my 20s.

As a teen, I used to go Six Flags with my friends every year. Then we grew up and stopped going, and then we went again in our late 20s and after 1 fucking rollercoaster we were like "Let's just.... wait before we go on another one."

Same with pulling all-nighters. Used to be able to, just can't now.

sigh, all-nighters. in college i would always pull all nighters before important exams. I remember seeing the sun come up while i was in my apt living room going through flashcards. After the exam i'd stroll home and sleep for like 13-14 hours and feel fine and back to normal.

Tried that shit in law school in mid-20s and it was impossible. I'd feel like shit, fall asleep anyway, have heart palpitations.

Now in my 30's, when I don't sleep well for a couple nights, I look like shit and feel like it too.

Youth is wasted on the young.

It is definitely exaggerated. I'm smaller now in my 40s than I was in my 20s. Granted, I realized early on that I couldn't forever drink beer and eat pizza every night and expect to stay the same size throughout the years...that being said, I still do those things just in moderation.

It really does just boil down to genetics and activity. We're going to lose something, but a lot relies on our diet and exercise - and we have to be honest about how much we're doing both.
