this was pretty much exactly what elon wanted. keep pushing things around until zuck says "enough of this bullshit" so he can then be like, "see, he's the one who cancelled, not me!"

I used to know someone who'd do that - would just refuse to admit they were cancelling on you and throw out unworkable alternatives until you caved and called it a day. Then the narrative was that you'd said no, not that they'd backed out.

It was exhausting and I could never work out why, because they weren't the Musk type trying to weasel out of being unable to put their money where their mouth was. Best guess I had was some form of social anxiety where they felt that made them the bad guy
