August 12, 2023 Starting on August 8th, wildfires swept across Hawaii, mainly on the island of Maui, causing widespread destruction. The historic town of Lāhainā was destroyed. The death count is currently at 80 and expected to rise.
The wildfires were exacerbated by strong gusts of winds as well as climate change which has led to less rainfall and higher temperatures in Hawaii. Parts of Maui are currently in severe drought. Wildfires have quadrupled in Hawaii in recent years.
A state of emergency and federal major disaster were declared. All tourists were asked to leave Maui. It will take years for the island to recover.
