Somebody that’s started this season: I loved the first season and completely skipped the 2nd because the supporting cast sounded like a who’s who of horrendous people. Do I need to watch the 2nd season to understand what’s happening here?

So far, no? They do a little recap at the start of the first episode that shows you who last season's murderer was, so even if it does come up you'll at least know that.
