I don’t know if it counts as a “reality” moment, but during a true crime tv program that deals with missing people, a woman was told live by the host of the show that her missing 15 years old daughter was dead, that the mother’s brother in law had confessed and they were looking for her corpse

It was so fucked up and I’ll never forget that woman’s petrified expression

I cannot believe anybody was soulless enough to do that on camera. WTF.

We have a show here called Long Lost Family where they help people look for relatives they want to get in touch with - a lot of adoptees, birth parents who were made to give up their child - and the thing I've always appreciated is that if the person they're looking for has died in the meantime, they don't tell them on camera. And that's a much less distressing circumstance to begin with than "let me tell you your child was murdered"
