I totally get why people think this is an antisemitic dog whistle, and I think Jamie Foxx was genuinely just referencing Judas?

Key word here is “THEY”. If he had posted “HE” then yes, I would’ve believed he was referring to Judas (which… we have clever ways to call out fake friends but whatever) but he’s wording is referring to a group. Not sure what he was thinking or where he was going but it does look antisemitic at first glance

That's 100% how I read it.

Accusing him of antisemitism over this post is a bit of a stretch.

It’s really not a stretch at all but it could definitely be a misunderstanding.

They can mean a person or a group, like "they out here" in Black culture.

but Black people often use 'they' as catch all slang

Fwiw, the post-60s Catholicism that I was raised in was excruciatingly specific that Jesus died for everyone’s sins and so his death was all of humanity’s fault. (Just roll with it, not trying to convert anyone here.)

In retrospect, that was at least in part an effort to combat the ancient, poisonous “Jews killed Christ” stuff. If Foxx’s Christianity had a similar tenet, he may not have had any idea how this could come across.

Though to be fair “we” would have been a far better choice than “they.”
