I’m from a country where essentially we don’t / can’t have strikes. I love my country, and we are known for our stability and efficiency, but this is a fucking stupid take. If the system is not working, you can’t work within the system. Individuals should be able to take on the system in a way where they can be collectively protected. Particularly in cases where capitalism has gotten to breaking point and people can’t live doing a decent day’s work.

I knew it was gonna be Singapore. I sat in an IO psych class once where the prof said that businesses there don't view workers as an expense but an asset (not the right wording, but they're a + and not a - on budgeting basically). If I remember correctly, the gov paid half of ppl's salary during covid

I haven’t been working in Singapore in years, but as far as I’m aware the government had introduced relief measures in respect of the pandemic but not to such an extent for all workers.

I’m no subject matter expert on this but yeah generally the approach seems to be to have a system which obviates the need for or discourages industrial action. It’s also in the context of an economy which still works for the general population (though it has faced its pressures during and now coming out of the pandemic), and strict laws about assembly / organising industrial action.

I can't believe that a country don't/can't have strikes! How do people voice their concerns if something wrong is happening? I guess, it is wild to me because I come from a country that strikes are a common occurrence lol

Technically we can have strikes but they are seen as a last resort and whoever wants to strike has to follow the relevant laws and requirements to a T. The context is also (1) strict laws on assembly and (2) general lack of incentives / societal accommodation for industrial action. Cos of this convo I googled when the major action was and it was a strike which was deemed illegal and happened a decade ago (resulting in criminal punishments for some of those involved in it).

I remember when the Occupy movement was big in NYC and other major cities someone tried to start a protest in the CBD area in Singapore and only four people (iirc) turned up and the coverage they got was mocking / people were generally bemused as to what they thought they could achieve.

Oh weird I didn't know this but didn't also think it impossible given all the unions and like, the existence of NTUC.. wasn't there a bus strike in 2012?

The strike I quoted above was the bus strike.

Hi!! That sounds about right tbh, like even something that's meant to upend the system has to follow the letter of the law, which is absolutely contrary to the purposes of a strike lol
