There are several different competition shows in the UK to cast the leads in West End musicals (The Sound of Music, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Oliver, The Wizard of Oz). In the United States, there was only one season where they cast a Danny and Sandy for a revival of Grease. They didn't necessarily teach them how to be stars but they did have them do challenges in acting, dancing, and singing. Several of the Grease contestants went on to have successful Broadway careers (Laura Osnes, Ashley Spencer, Kate Rockwell). It was basically a month long televised audition.

One of the things the Grease show had in common with Step It Up and Dance is that unlike America's Next Top Model, all of the footage was of the actual competition. There was no shit stirring where they had the contestants live together in a house without outside communication, plied them with copious amounts of alcohol, and deliberately made them sleep deprived in the hopes of filming a fight.

There were some other singing/dancing shows around the same time but my memory of them was a lot of drama (Making the Band, the Pussycat Dolls show).
