They're really missing some big name celebs tbh, like we had that post about nepo babies the other day but it should've been about "movie stars" like where is jlaw, zendaya, tom holland?? the cast of barbie? the cast of oppenheimer?? like everyone was praising them for leaving the premiere in "solidarity" and they were talking about making their picket signs and yet i haven't seen any of them even show up for a photo op

To be fair to them, a lot of folks probably weren't in LA when the strike started - a lot of big stars don't live there or are still filming indies elsewhere.

Or they might just not be there - I know I'm not at half of the protests I believe in/am free for, and I don't even have the excuse that my presence might be a distraction/undercut the message. I'll save my ire for anyone crossing the picket line since it's really the studios we should be hating.

THIS
All of these people who would otherwise be doing promo should be picketing

I'm wondering if there's a reason. I mean, look at Tom Cruise, people are out there calling him a scab for trying to work on behalf of the actors with AMPTP. A lot of the narrative that's anti-union rn is that actors are "whiny millionaires," so they could be asking bigger names to not be there so the message about how actors aren't all movie stars and work paycheck to paycheck like everyone else doesn't get lost.

That was my thought, it's not necessarily a good look to have a bunch of millionaires out there campaigning for higher wages. It was smart to put recognizable but less obviously wealthy actors front and center, and keep anyone polarizing behind the scenes.

Tom Cruise obviously doesn't care about exploitation though, or he wouldn't shill for his cult.

people were calling him a scab bc he asked for permission to keep promoting during the strike, (yes, it happened last month but it was reported now and ppl don't read the details) AND sag asked him to picket and he p much refused so idt the narrative of they don't want big names is true

Yeah, but I'm saying that having a big name like him tried to negotiate, and then it backfired for him especially (I agree with the criticism of him being a Scientologist) and is somewhat taking away from the narrative. Also, the source for him not wanting to picket seems to come from Variety unless you have another source? But Variety isn't a credible source per this comment (https://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/126438580.html?thread=20842739380#t20842739380)

I mean I wouldn't put it past the rich actors to not care, but I also am not going to cast any judgment till SAG-AFTRA or a trustworthy source says otherwise at this time. Trying to sow discourse like this can be dangerous during this time.

honestly i saw this on twitter so i'm not sure what the source was, but sure let's say it's fake and he wasn't asked to picket, that doesn't mean he shouldn't?? if that was me i would've showed up the next day just to prove that reporting wrong. i'm sure it would be a big morale booster to all those no name actors if any of the big names showed up and pretended they care

The Oppenheimer walk out and comment about making signs was clearly at the call and direction of Nolan. I am surprised we haven’t seen any of them picketing though. Matt and Emily were pretty clearly about supporting it but I don’t think any of them have been photographed out anywhere yet.

I think America was out on the picket line from the Barbie cast I haven’t seen many others but there might have been some.

I do wonder if SAG is trying to avoid the big big names being out there bc of the “spoiled rich actor” who make millions pushback. A lot of their public position has been around the fact that most actors in SAG make little and the top actors are tiny percentage of the guild.

plenty of rich mainstream celebs have been on the picket line, so idt they're refusing big names, if anything it would probably send a message to studios AND "it" celebs have big fandoms that will support them
imo that "spoiled rich actor" narrative comes mainly from dumb magas and they won't get it no matter what, so you might as well get the big names and their fandoms support

While I mostly agree with you I think it can come from more than just maga types and people aren’t always the most supportive of unions/strikes.

I do think several big names probably do have direct connects with studios and/or big corps owned by the same people that own the studios and some of them are dodging for those reasons.

The Oppenheimer cast is an odd one to me as Nolan basically directed them to join the picket line with his comment and even just showing up for a photo op once would have fulfilled that.

ppl already thing those big name actors are "typical" actors when it isn't the case, and they aren't a true representation of the union at all. them being the faces of this strike is counterproductive to the messaging SAG's been going with (that most actors are overworked and underpaid) and that messaging seems to be working based on all the residual tiktoks that have been going viral

The British actors can’t support right? Cause they’re part of a different union or something?

well there's plenty of actors who are members of both unions, i'm not 100% sure how it works but i think members of equity are allowed to work if they're working on a british production under their equity contract but idt they're banned from supporting the strike or join the picket line if they're not currently working

They can't strike themselves, but I saw on Hayley Atwells Insta that they have like gatherings in solidarity to spread awareness what the strike is about and that Equity supports it from across the pond.
