I know Texas has awful laws but putting it 1 seems odd. They talk about how there’s an influx of young people and a lot of economic opportunity - I see that as potential for change and a changing demographic (which is what seems to be happening if you look at recent elections). I would think Oklahoma or Arkansas, with less growth potential would be worse but idk I don’t live in any of these places…

texas is an interesting case. while there has been a lot of internal migration to the state, much of that migration is right wingers moving to texas from blue states.

there is also the fact that a lot of latin american voters in texas have shifted to the right, particularly in the rio grande valley. rather than demographics being destiny in texas it has undergone something of a realignment.

ofc, voter suppression also continues to be a major issue, and gerrymandering is a problem on the state level and in house races. but there are a lot of other factors as to why blue texas hasn’t happened and is probably still a ways away from happening. ofc it is worth investing in but i do think a clear eyed view of the political reality is important. texas isn’t georgia or arizona.

This makes sense, thank you. My view may be skewed because I know a few gay women that moved down to Houston + know a few other liberal people that have moved to the state.

big cities virtually everywhere are very blue tbh but in texas the suburbs are still pretty red, especially as republicans from the north move there.

i think a really interesting statistic is that beto o’rourke actually narrowly won in 2022 amongst native texans! but amongst the newer migrants to texas he was absolutely slaughtered which made the difference in re-electing abbott.

That is interesting (and very disheartening).

As a latina, this will never not baffle me tbh....

It's like when I was at the Supreme Court when they voted in marriage equality, the homophobes were largely black and Latino people who bussed in with their churches, with it mostly composed of international 1st gen black immigrants. So shitty.

"economic opportunity" means it's a great place to be a business but a terrible place to be a worker

This is true, but the cost of living is lower than a lot of places and there’s no income tax. Take home pay is significantly higher in Texas than say NY or CA

Income tax being eliminated doesn’t typically ease much of the tax burden for people who aren’t already making a ton of money because they just use sales tax and higher property taxes to make up for it.

I don't get Texas being #1, even above places like Alabama and Mississippi not even being on the list. And yes, I have lived in or visited frequently all three states because of family lol.

Texas' shitty electrical grid makes it possibly last place for me, I live in Florida which is also awful but at least my electricity stays on unless it's a hurricane
