‘This is so creepy!’: the Taylor Swift vinyl haunted by Britain’s weirdest musicians

July 13, 2023 -“Send help” - TikToker Rachel Hunter received a spooky surprise when she played her newly-purchased Taylor Swift vinyl - rather than the anything-but-elusive chanteuse’s Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), the vinyl seems to have been pressed with Happy Land: A Compendium of Electronic Music from the British Isles 1992-1996 (Vol 1) - an obscure compilation album of industrial-electric music from the UK.
-“I thought maybe the vinyl had some sort of special message,” she says. “Because Taylor does that sort of thing. This voice was saying strange things about flesh and anxiety. I was like: this is weird. I thought maybe the other side would be less strange but I flipped it over and, no, it only got weirder.”

-It’s believed to be part of a batch of mistakenly pressed vinyls, though no others have yet surfaced. It’s estimated that about 50% of purchased vinyls are never actually played and only kept for collection purposes.
-Swift’s label released a statement: “We are aware that there are an extremely limited number of incorrectly pressed vinyl copies in circulation and have addressed the issue.” The mix-up seemingly occurred at the French plant MPO, which pressed both records.
-Some have speculated that this was an intentional marketing ploy by the capitalist queen herself to inspire people who otherwise wouldn’t have ordered the vinyl to do so - “These records are going to be like gold dust,” says Dan Hill, owner of the label that produced them. “I’ve bought two, and everyone in my office has bought one. Every single person I know, even those who never buy records, is reaching out to try and get a copy. It’s brilliant. You’ve got these Taylor Swift fans who have been force-fed electronic music and then you’ve got this whole Discogs-digging culture trying to find faulty Taylor Swift records who never in their life would normally buy them.”
-In another strange twist, one of the songs (Ultramarine’s track Happy Land) appears on both sides of the vinyl which is supposedly impossible - “That is a whole other Bermuda Triangle of weirdness,” says Hill. “It’s going down some weird vortex I can’t even comprehend. I don’t know how that’s happened because technically it’s impossible.” “That would require a whole new lacquer to have been used that differs from our original album.”
This is the other side, I'm crying 😂

July 10, 2023 -Mashups of Swift and some of the album’s songs have already sprung up. When contacted for comment Stephen Mallinder, co-founder of Cabaret Voltaire (one of the bands featured on the album) had this to say: “We’re up for anything. If Taylor wants a mix, we’ll write some tunes.”
What do you think ontd? Aural haunting or is the queen of capitalism at it again?
