Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny: Really enjoyed this! A couple of dodgy moments of CGI, and I wish they'd fixed [Spoiler (click to open)]Harrison's voice in the part where he's deaged, but overall, a fun action adventurer with some heart. I don't have any nostalgic attachment to the original series, though, so I know that can make a difference.
Tommy (1975): Holy shit, the 70s ruled. I looked up the box office for this one, fully expecting it to have flopped, but it made a bunch of money!?! How was the public more open to wild shit like this 50 years ago than it is now?!?! Anyway, I am begging people to bring back the rock opera film!!
Ann Margret rolling around in beans... Elton John wearing gigantic shoes and playing pinball with a keyboard... Tina Turner literally turning into a hypodermic needle... Jack Nicholson singing.... how is this real? I can't believe it took me this long to watch it, but I am so glad my first experience was in a (reasonably full!) theater with an incredibly receptive audience. There were definitely bits that I would have changed given the chance, but overall, the anti-consumerism, anti-celeb worship messages held up pretty well. My favorite part was the Pinball Wizard scene, obvs, but there were several excellent stretches.
In fact, I loved the whole thing up til [Spoiler (click to open)]Tommy gets "free" and then the last half hour kind of lost momentum. But whatever, I'll allow it! Ann-Margret really left it all out there... MVP!!
Might get to Joy Ride this weekend, but if not, I won't have another chance til Barbenheimer weekend, which is already pretty busy!!
